Transportation from/to the Airport

By Metro: Line 1 from Terminal 2 of Sofia Airport

The trip to Inter Expo Center (Station “IEC – Tzarigradsko Shose”) takes up to 10 min and the same line goes to city center (trip to “Serdica” Station will take up to 30 minutes). The single trip price is 1.60 lv (0.80 €) . 

By Bus: Bus lines No 84 and 184 are available from Sofia Airport to Sofia University Rectorate. From there, Cathedral St. Alexanrdar Nevski is on 5-10 min by walk. There is Sofia info center into underpass at the Sofia University. The single trip price is 1.60 lv (0.80 €) and it is bought from the bus driver.

By Taxi: For Sofia guests comfort and safety, Sofia airport recommend the services of the taxi operator OK Supertrans AD as contractual partner of Sofia Airport.

Iimportant! We recommend that you do not use taxi services offered outside the office of the taxi operator or in front of the terminal to avoid the risk of abuse.

The distance from Sofia Airport to IEC is about 6 km. The price should be about 6-7 lv (up to 4 €).
The distance from IEC to Sofia Center (Sofia University Rectorate) is about 8 km.

 

Transportation in the City

Main transportation vehicles in the city are public buses, trams, trolleybuses, and underground. A ticket for single travel is 1.60 BGN (approx. 0.8 €). A card for 10 single trips for one passenger is 12 BGN (approx. 6 €).

Tip! A daily pass for all lines is available for 4 BGN per day, (approx. 2 €).

Tickets for buses, trams, and trolleybuses can be purchased from drivers and from all ticket outlets and most newspaper kiosks. After getting into the vehicle the ticket is to be validated by means of punching machine. Tickets for trams and trolleybuses can also be purchased from a vending machine (the machine doesn’t give the change) in the vehicle.

Tickets for metro can be bought at ticket machines at the entrances of the metro stations or at cashier’s desk. The ticket should be validated at the barriers at the entrance to the metro stations. The ticket is valid to travel in the metro within 30 minutes from the issue hour.

Climate

The climate of Sofia is continental, with cold winters and warm summers. The city is located at 550-600 m above sea level. The month of August average temperatures are: max – 26 °C, min – 14°C. Generally, daytime temperatures are pleasant, usually with cool nights. But there can also be heat waves, which typically do not last long, with highs about 36-38 °C. Air humidity is not high and nights remain cool.

 

Monetary System

The national currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Bank notes of the following denominations are in circulation: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 Levs. The official exchange rate euro to lev is 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN.

Exchange money at banks or exchange bureaus. Use only ATM’s in well-lit areas and, even better, ATM’s attached to bank offices. Make sure you read all the small print before exchanging. There are numerous foreign exchange offices, ATMs and bank offices around the city centre.
